Ever put something off for weeks… then it takes three minutes?
That’s not laziness—it’s not knowing the next step.
When your brain doesn’t see a clear first move, it says, “I’ll figure it out later.”
Later becomes days… weeks… never.
The Fix
-
If it’s <5 minutes, do it now. It might be a pain, but it prevents those “dark clouds” from growing a molehill into a mountain.
-
If it’ll take more work, use the Sticky Note Rule:
-
Write the task.
-
Write what you don’t know.
-
Write your best first guess at a solution/next step.
Slap it in the center of your screen and come back to it today—otherwise you’ll forget the details.
-
Examples
-
“Add XXX info to YYYY sentence. Not sure how—maybe a merge field? Need to check.”
-
“Client says they didn’t receive XXX. System shows ‘sent.’ Could be their email—check spam/bounce.”
P.S. Third option: hand it off. Instead of a sticky note to yourself, send a two-sentence email to The Marketing Switch and we’ll knock it out—so you stay focused (and billable). No more procrastination.
