We’ve covered the three main ways businesses get leads and the truth about each one.
Quick recap:
#1. Referrals are king.
With a few simple techniques, you can generate far more referrals than you’re getting today.

#2. Online Search comes down to proving to Google and AI that you’re knowledgeable, trustworthy, and actively in business.
That means having a strong online presence that’s consistently updated. You can read that blog HERE.
And now for #3: Ads.
Right off the bat, ads are #3.
Why aren’t they #1?
Because your marketing foundation should be built on getting as many free (or nearly free) leads as possible through referrals and online search.
Then you run ads.
After all, would you rather pay for leads or have them come to you naturally?
Whether you’re already advertising or just thinking about it, make sure your referral system and online presence are solid first.
Now, I could talk about ad platforms (Google PPC vs. Facebook ads vs. display ads).
I could talk about headlines, landing pages, offers, and calls to action.
But I won’t.
Why?
Because the single most important part of advertising—the thing that should drive every decision you make—is something most businesses haven’t done.
You must know your ideal client.
Really know them.
What do they do? What media do they consume? Where do they live? What do they value? What frustrates them? What keeps them awake at night?
The answers to those questions should drive every part of your marketing.
Example: If your ideal client is a workaholic executive at a large tech company, do you think he’s going to click your ad while scrolling Facebook?
NOTE:
Before you can find your ideal client, you have to decide WHAT your ideal client actually is.
Is it the client who pays you the most?
Maybe. But what if they’re also the ones who consume all your time and are the hardest to work with?
Or is it the client who responds quickly, trusts your recommendations, happily refers others, and sings your praises?
Knowing what your ideal client is, then who you ideal client is will drive every decision about your marketing, especially your ads.
